Statement from Yonkers Republican 3rd Ward Leader
It is disturbing but not surprising that Mike Spano has decided to turn his back on so many of us who have supported him over the years.
What's disturbing is that less than 2 weeks ago Mike Spano held a fundraiser geared toward his Republican supporters without a word of an imminent Party change. This act of deception is shameful and borders on thievery.
Mike's voting record is far from Republican. Whether you consider yourself a moderate or conservative Republican, it's difficult to stomach a voting history more centered on pandering than on a core belief in anything at all. It seems that Mike more often than was voting with the Democrats on every issue across the board.
Mike Spano was never really a Republican and will never really be a Democrat. He is simply put a "Spanocrat". What's good for Mike and the Spano family is where you will find Mike; only interested in pursuing an agenda that benefits constituents when that agenda corresponds with the interests of the Spano's and those dependent on them for jobs.
Funny however is that Mike, now proud to be a Democrat, so smugly was standing with the likes of Sheldon Silver. Remember all the rhetoric over the past years about how Silver is the single reason that Mike couldn't pass the sex offender bill. So last year it finally passes, Mike's only real achievement in a long career in Albany, and all is forgotten. And what's more, how about standing right next to Andrea Stewart-Cousins. The woman who defeated brother Nick for the senate seat. She was, in the mind of the Spano's and Spano supporters, public enemy #1. Now she is a colleague, a partner working to further the liberal agenda. I can't wait for the headline next year, "Mike Spano endorses Hillary Clinton for president" of course the sub caption will be "if she remains the front runner, otherwise I'm with the other guy too".
This marks the breaking of the last link of the chain that the Spano's used to hold hostage the Yonkers and Westchester GOP. We are now free to move in the right direction and build a party based on something not someone. In 2008, I know who I won't be supporting - Mike Spano.
